How do I decode a secret message when I don’t know the code?
Paste the message into the cipher decoder. It tries the common codes – Caesar, ROT13, Atbash, binary, Base64, letter numbers, Morse and more – and lists the most likely answers first.
Step by step
- Open the cipher decoder.
- Paste the coded message and press Decode.
- Look at the top answers. If one looks right, press open tool to see it in that code’s own tool.
- Nothing looks right? Try the cryptogram solver for letter-swap codes, or the codes and ciphers page for symbol codes like pigpen or runes.

Very short messages are hard to identify because there is so little to go on. Try a longer piece of the message.
