How the anagram solver works
An anagram uses every letter of the original exactly once. Type a word or any jumble of letters and the solver lists the full-length anagrams at the top, so you can see at a glance whether the letters rearrange into another single word.
Below that you will find every shorter word the letters make, grouped by length. These are useful when an anagram only needs part of the letters, or when you are building a word from a clue.
Press Find two-word anagrams to see phrases that use all the letters across two words, such as dormitory becoming dirty room. Two-word searches take longer, so they run only when you ask and stop after a couple of seconds with the best results found.
Solving anagram clues in cryptic crosswords
Cryptic clues often signal an anagram with words such as broken, wild, mixed, confused or out. The letters to rearrange, called the fodder, usually sit right beside that signal, and the answer length in brackets tells you how many letters to look for.
Count the fodder letters and check they match the answer length. If they do, type them in and look only at the full-length anagrams. If there are a couple of extra letters, the clue may also involve taking letters away, so the shorter-word groups help.
When the solver gives several full anagrams, use the definition part of the clue, normally at the very start or end, to pick the right one. Crossing letters from answers you have already filled in will narrow it further; the Word finder takes a pattern such as ?a?e?t for exactly that.
For multi-word answers like (5,4), use the two-word anagram search and look for a pair with the right lengths.
Tips for word games
In board games, a full-length anagram of your rack is the best play you can make, because using all seven tiles usually earns a bonus. If none exists, the six-letter group is the next place to look.
Switch the dictionary to UK or US to match the game you are playing, so spelling variants like organise and organize only appear when they should.
Questions and answers
What is an anagram?
A word or phrase made by rearranging all the letters of another, using each letter once. Listen and silent are anagrams of each other.
Can it find anagrams made of two words?
Yes. Press Find two-word anagrams under the results. It looks for pairs of real words that together use every letter, and shows the most common words first.
Why does the two-word search sometimes say it stopped early?
Long inputs can have thousands of two-word combinations. To keep the page quick, the search stops after a couple of seconds and shows the best pairs found so far.
Does it work for cryptic crossword clues?
Yes. Type the anagram fodder from the clue and check the full-length results. Use the answer length and the definition in the clue to choose between them.
Can I include a missing letter?
Yes. Add a question mark for an unknown letter and the solver treats it as a blank tile, filling it with any letter that makes a word.
