How do I make a crossword to play or print?
In the crossword generator, choose straight or cryptic clues, a level, a size and a topic, then press Make a crossword. Play it on screen or print it with the answers on a separate page.
Step by step
- Open the crossword generator (or the cryptic crossword generator).
- Choose Straight clues and a level: Easy suits children and beginners.
- Pick a size (9 × 9 is quick, 13 × 13 is newspaper size) and, if you like, a topic.
- Press Make a crossword. Every press makes a new one.
- Tap a square and type to play. Tap again to switch between across and down. Or print it.
- Want to share it? The puzzle code rebuilds the same crossword for a friend.
Questions and fixes
The printout is cut off or has the wrong margins
In the print window, set the scale to “Default” or “Fit to page”, keep margins on “Default”, and check the paper size (A4 in the UK, Letter in the US). Turning on “Background graphics” keeps coloured boxes and shading.
All the answers aren’t about my topic
In a British grid, topic words are used wherever they fit. Choose the Free-form grid style for a whole puzzle on one topic.
