W.--
Remembering W
- It sounds like di-dah-dah. Say it out loud as you listen, and learn the rhythm rather than counting dots and dashes.
- W has 3 signals: 1 dot and 2 dashes. It takes 9 units of time to send, where a dot is one unit.
- W is roughly the 15th most common letter in English. Morse code gives the shortest codes to the commonest letters, which is why rarer letters like W are longer.
- Swap every dot for a dash and every dash for a dot and you get D (-..). Learning opposite pairs together helps them stick.
- Read it backwards and you get G (--.).
- Add more signals to the end of W and you get J and P, so it helps to learn these letters after W.
